There are a variety of concrete grades used for a variety of jobs. The strength of concrete depends on its grade, or the ratio of cement to sand or gravel when mixed with water. The less aggregate (such as gravel or sand) you use in mixing concrete, the stronger you can make the concrete, especially if a minimal amount of water is used in its preparation. Using five sack mix helps insure better final product. This refers to the amount of cement in the mix per cubic yard.
Wire mesh and rebar both enhance the strength of your concrete. Concrete wire mesh can help to prevent the emergence of concrete cracks, but for high traffic areas rebar beneath the concrete may be necessary.

When pouring new concrete flatwork to existing flatwork it is very helpful in the long term to install rebar dowels into the existing concrete flatwork for a positive connection from the existing to the new concrete lfatwork.
Good concrete flatwork has proper sub base, i.e. baserock. Base rock helps promote concrete hydration and improves drainage. The thickness varies upon specific application.
